CHARLES VIII l'Affable son of Louis XI and Charlotte of Savoy August 30, 1483 - April 7, 1498 (crown) KAROLVS : DEI : GRA : FRAnCORUm : REX :. Crowned shield of France surmounted by a sun. R/. (coronet) XPS: VInCIT... Cross with fleur-de-lys arms. Punctuation by two superimposed annulets on obverse and reverse. ♦ Fr 313; Dy 575 Écu d'or au Soleil (1st issue September 11, 1483). Point 18th = Paris (3.45 g) Regular flan. A very fine example. From his expeditions to Italy, LOUIS XII brought back a pronounced taste for the artistic currents of that country, and in particular created the "teston" on which the monarch's portrait appears. This coinage was used by his successors to pay mercenaries.
