The reign of PHILIPPE VI de Valois got off to a good start with the issue of superb coins depicting the king "in majesty" to finance his troops. This apparent prosperity vanished in 1337 with the outbreak of the Hundred Years' War. The coinage of Philip VI was the most exuberant of the Middle Ages, flourishing in a variety of types. As a means of propaganda, the king is depicted in majesty, with all the symbols of power and strength: the crown, the scepter, the hand of justice, the shield of lilies, the lion and the sword. The Crown, the attribute of kings, is the symbol of sovereignty, both terrestrial and divine, of power, authority and dignity. Its circular shape symbolizes the perfection of the circle. The scepter is the symbol of command. The lily is the sign of light and purity, but it is also the symbol of Christian royalty and the heraldic emblem of the kings of France. The lion is the symbol of strength, righteousness and bravery. The hand of justice is specific to the judiciary. Often depicted armed with a sword, the king is also a warrior. Kings wore it when they were crowned. Inherited from Charlemagne's sword, it alludes to the famous swords of the Knights: Roland (Durandal) and Arthur (Excalibur). The Golden Angel has a political significance... since the demon struck down by the angel symbolizes the crushing of the English enemy.
