1940 DELAHAYE 135 MS Roadster Grand Luxe... - Lot 34 - Osenat
1940 DELAHAYE 135 MS Roadster Grand Luxe - HENRI CHAPRON - Without reserve - Chassis N° 60233 - 1940 New York World's Fair car - Ex-Richard Hall - Chapron certificate - Extremely rare bodywork - Collector's registration On July 25, 1939, the Delahaye automobile company delivered chassis 135, No. 60233, to the Chapron workshops. As indicated on the Chapron sheet, it was intended to be bodied as a Grand Luxe Roadster for the Paris Motor Show. But because of the war, it was finally sent across the Atlantic for the New York World's Fair. Gazelle Beige and Pirate Red were selected, with red upholstery and hood. A configuration it still wears today. The car is built during the winter of 1939-1940. On February 28, 1940, it was delivered to Automobiles Delahaye, and an invoice for 44,445 francs was drawn up. In March 1940, chassis N° 60233 left France (it would not return until 65 years later). On May 11, 1940, the New York World's Fair opened its doors and ran until October of the same year. France was occupied, and Delahaye, who had sent the car to New York, found it impossible to repatriate it. The decision was made to sell it locally. Many months later, the car was sold to Richard Hall. He kept it for over 50 years. In the 1960s, André Surmain, a collector visiting the United States, photographed the car. An image that has survived to this day. In 1996, the Delahaye, still in the hands of Richard Hall, won the Classic Car Club of America's Premier Crown, a distinction reserved for automobiles that have won several concours d 'élégance. At the same time, the car was restored in the Compétition Motors workshops (no invoices). The car's original configuration was preserved, as was the manual gearbox. In 2004, our collector discovered this car in the United States. After many months of negotiation, in March 2005, #60233 returned to France, 65 years after its departure. This magnificent Roadster took part in numerous rallies throughout Europe, always travelling to them by road. In 2012, a mechanical overhaul was carried out for a total of around 8,000 euros. In 2020, as a result of the pandemic, the car was discontinued. As it has not been driven since then, an overhaul is required to get this luxury roadster back on the road. 1940 DELAHAYE 135 MS Roadster Grand Luxe - HENRI CHAPRON - No reserve - Chassis N° 60233 - 1940 New York World's Fair car - Ex-Richard Hall - Chapron certificate - Extremely rare bodywork - Collector's registration On July 25, 1939, the Delahaye automobile company delivered chassis 135, N° 60233, to the Chapron workshops.
