SET RELATING TO THE MAJOR WORK BY AUGUSTIN FILON, FORMER TUT - Lot 329
SET RELATING TO THE MAJOR WORK BY AUGUSTIN FILON, FORMER TUTOR TO THE PRINCE IMPERIAL (FROM 1867 TO 1875). It presents the genesis of the work and the difficulties inherent in writing and publishing it. Conceived in 1909 on the initiative of the Librairie Nationale publishing house, the book was finally published by Librairie Hachette in 1912. The preparatory file includes : -2 letters from the "Librairie Nationale" publishing house: the first, inviting Augustin Filon to "compile his articles on the Prince Impérial in a deluxe, highly illustrated volume" (October 1909); the second, thanking him for agreeing to write this book - "acceptance respectfully subordinated to the goodwill of the Empress" (publisher's autograph draft [Nov. 1909]); -Extensive correspondence from Augustin Filon to his publisher and journalist Henry Frichet, comprising 23 autograph letters, signed letters and signed cards. The former tutor to the Prince Impérial describes the progress of his work (drafting chapters, assembling and selecting illustrations, book architecture), the acquisition or research of works relating to his late pupil (the Comte d'Hérisson, René Minon, ...), his trips to Farnborough - Empress Eugénie's residence in exile - to collect "precious documents", meetings with the Empress, Franceschini Pietri and Abbé Misset (who had built up a substantial collection around the Prince Imperial), and negotiations with the "Hachette" publishing house. It should also be noted that the Villa Cyrnos in Cap Martin - a resort where the Empress liked to stay - is mentioned several times in the correspondence. -An autograph receipt from M. de Lamotte for a photograph of the Prince Imperial "in officer's costume" (November 27, 1909); -3 school notebooks: one signed autograph notebook by Henry Frichet: "Plan général de l'ouvrage" (15 pages) / two autograph notebooks by the publisher, entitled: "Le Prince Impérial".
