Enrico BUTTI (1847-1932) - Lot 4
Enrico BUTTI (1847-1932) Jeune fille pensive or Agiatezza perduta Large white marble group signed on the back and dated 1881. H: 140 cm (damaged cup and restoration to a hoof) Agiatezza perduta (Lost Wealth), known from a print depicting a poor young girl in intricate, patched clothes, is an example of Butti's verism. Butti created it in 1876, but didn't exhibit it in Milan until 1878, a year later. Butti created it in 1876, but didn't exhibit it in Milan until 1878, a year before Cavi Bussi's monument. This encouraged critics to contrast Agiatezza perduta with Butti's Angel to demonstrate his change of style. Butti is best known today for his working-class figures such as Il minatore, 1888, and his public sculptures, including Il guerriero di Legnano, 1900, and the monument to Giuseppe Verdi, 1913. A leading sculptor in Milan for almost fifty years, Butti was appointed professor of sculpture at the Brera Academy in 1893 and retired.
