ROLLAND (Romain). - Lot 91
ROLLAND (Romain). Set of 7 autograph letters signed to a young writer. February 5, 1910-January 2, 1911. In total about 18 pp. in-8 and 5 pp. in-12. S.l., February 7, 1910: "... I am not a Hassler [character in his novel Jean-Christophe]: LIFE'S TRIALS HAVE NOTHING TO SHAME MY IDEALISM. I only distrust myself a little, when an artist comes to me for advice... ". - S.l., February 10, 1910: "I have read your verses and your short story. One senses in them deeply lived emotions; and in that way, they touch. But these deep emotions are perhaps not expressed deeply enough. That's good - not good enough. I THINK YOU'RE TOO CLOSE TO WHAT YOU WRITE. THERE'S A DANGER IN TRANSMUTING WHAT YOU FEEL INTO ART TOO QUICKLY... Do you believe in art, in something eternal? In that case, be patient, dream and write, for yourself, for one or two or three friends perhaps. If what you dream is great, others will come and warm up to it. If not, you will at least have burned yourself to the glory of the Eternal: and that is happiness..." - S.l., July 17 1910: "I have read your manuscript. It is tragic. I think it would make a considerable impact if published. An effect of scandal, terror and pain. My heart sinks as I read certain pages. The whole style needs to be rigorously revised, and everything that is loose, overly spoken or journalistic needs to be mercilessly crossed out. It has to be bronze..." - Schœnbrunn (near Zug, Switzerland), August 25, 1910: "I'm working on the penultimate volume of Christophe. I won't leave the work now, I think, until it's finished. I'M GOING THROUGH SOME CRUEL TORMENTS. It is said that the author animates his heroes with his thoughts; and this is true, I know it better than anyone. But it's also true that THE HEROES ANIMATE THE AUTHOR WITH THEIR PASSIONS, and communicate their troubles to him. As a result, Christophe's animal is taking me through a terrible crisis at the moment... THERE'S A HORDE OF MONSTROUS, STUPID PANGERMANISTS IN GERMANY... Unfortunately, the tragedy is that, in the same nation, we find side by side enraged people who only want to destroy, speculators who only want to do business, good people who only want to be left alone, and pure idealists who only want to love and fraternize. You can only wage war on some by waging it on others. It's an atrocious thing... In truth, I FEEL I AM FROM THE SAME COUNTRY AS A FREE SPIRIT OF ANY COUNTRY, MORE THAN FROM A MECHANICAL FANATIC OF MIEN..."
