DUFOUR & CERET in FERNEY Yellow gold watch, hinged case with a medallion surrounded by a leafy arcature on the back, bezel set with brilliants, white enamel dial with Roman numerals, openworked cock movement, verge escapement, spindle and chain, spiral balance, regulating disc, signed "Dufour & Ceret à Ferney". Late 18th century Gross weight: 94 g D: 40 mm (accidents and missing parts) Manufacture horlogère de Ferney-Voltaire This town, near the Swiss border in the canton of Geneva, owes its fame to the writer François Marie Arouet (1694-1778), who at the age of 24 took the name of VOLTAIRE. The latter, who practically founded the town, lived here habitually from 1758 until his death. In the early 1770s, he set up a watch factory employing watchmakers who had fled from Geneva to support the French king. By 1773, some six hundred people were working at Ferney, producing four thousand watches a year and shipping them all over Europe, in competition with the lucrative Geneva trade. Voltaire took this activity to heart, using his many social contacts to sell his products. Among the watchmakers who developed their business here were Jean-Antoine Lépine, as well as Dufour and Ceret, entrepreneurs of the Manufacture Royale de montres in Ferney.
