NAPOLÉON IER. - Lot 100
NAPOLÉON IER. Letter signed "Napole" to the viceroy of Italy, his adopted son Prince Eugène de Beauharnais. Paris, February 25, 1806. One p. in-4, a few marginal ink stains, one with a bite. A fine letter in which the emperor raises his voice and offers scathing criticism of Prince Eugene's actions in the kingdom of Italy. "My son, Lauriston has sent me all the decrees relating to the ORGANIZATION OF THE VENICE MARINE of February 7 [the future marshal Jacques-Alexandre-Bernard Lauriston was then general and imperial commissioner for Dalmatia]. YOU WALK WITH TOO MUCH HASTE. It will cost me as much in Venice as in Brest, and that without doing anything: my intention is to keep everything on the same footing as it was under the Austrians. You don't wait for orders and you don't know what you're doing in Italy. You've had a frigate built without a plan. YOU THINK THAT'S THE WAY TO DO IT. Have the work suspended until my Minister of the Navy has sent the frigate's plan. We'll only make patraques [i.e. poor-quality ships], like everything else built in Venice, and it won't cost me any less...". Napoleon I, Correspondance générale, Paris, Fayard, vol. VI, 2009, no. 11544.
