FLAHAUT (CHARLES DE). - Lot 17
FLAHAUT (CHARLES DE). Autograph letter signed to Anatole de Montesquiou, then aide-de-camp to Marshal Davout in Poland. S.l., [probably circa October 1808]. 3/4 p. in-4, address on spine, vestige of red wax seal, tear to address leaf due to opening without affecting text. "I hear, my dear Anatole, that you are in Warsaw. I think you're having a great time, and I'm delighted. As for me, I'm terribly bored. PLEASE, MY DEAR FRIEND, GIVE THIS LETTER TO MADAME COUNTESS ALEXANDRE POTOCKA. Give it to her yourself. If, on the other hand, you have some commissions for Pomerania (which I don't think you do), send them to me. They will be faithfully executed. Love, your friend..." LITTLE NIECE OF STANISLAS PONIATOWSKI, LAST KING OF POLAND, ANNA TYSZKIEWICZ married Count Alexandre Potocki, who was Chamberlain to Napoleon I during the period of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw. Cultured and fond of the arts, she visited Paris in 1810, where she met the emperor. SHE HAD A LIAISON WITH CHARLES DE FLAHAUT, who later preferred her to Queen Hortense. She left memoirs in French, published in 1897. NATURAL SON OF TALLEYRAND, CHARLES DE FLAHAUT (1785-1870) initially pursued a military career, becoming brigadier general in 1812 and division general in 1813, serving as aide-de-camp to Murat (October 1802-January 1807), Berthier (July 1808-January 1813) and Napoleon I (January 1813-September 1814 and March 1815). He was made a peer of France in June 1815, but resigned in 1817 before reinstating his rank in 1830. He then served twice as ambassador to Louis-Philippe I, in Berlin (1831) and Vienna (1841-1848), then supported the coup d'état of 1851 and was made a senator in 1852. A ladies' man, he was the lover of Queen Hortense, with whom he had a son, the future Duc de Morny. FUTURE GENERAL AND PAIR OF FRANCE, ANATOLE DE MONTESQUIOU (1788-1878) was the son of the Emperor's grand chamberlain and the King of Rome's governess. Having chosen a career in arms, he took part in the Empire's campaigns as aide-de-camp to Marshal Davout (October 1808-March 1809), officer to Napoleon I (March 1809-March 1812), aide-de-camp to Marshal Berthier (March 1812-January 1814) and again officer to the Emperor (January-April 1814). The July Revolution made him a general and a peer of France.
