NAPOLÉON III. - Lot 122
NAPOLÉON III. Set of 7 volumes, 5 bound and 2 paperback. POLITICAL AND MILITARY CONSIDERATIONS ON SWITZERLAND. Paris, Alphonse Levavasseur, Bousquet, 1833. Booklet in-8, paperback; foxing. First edition. The future Napoleon III spent part of his youth at his mother's castle in Arenenberg in the canton of Thurgau, and studied artillery at the military school in Thun in the canton of Bern, from which he graduated. - DES IDEES NAPOLEONIENNES. Paris, Paulin, 1839. Large in-8, copy with very wide margins, modern half-chagrin, covers preserved; spine slightly faded. First French edition, published the same year as the extremely rare original published in London the same year. The touchstone of Bonapartism's conquest, this political essay, published by Prince Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte while in exile in London, sets out the body of doctrine that would bring him to power in 1848, as a prelude to the refoundation of the Empire: popular sovereignty but personalization of power, liberty but authority, attention to the world of workers and peasants. - EXTINCTION DU PAUPERISME. Paris, Ch.-Éd. Temblaire, September 1848. Booklet in-32, paperback. Essay originally published in 1844. - WORKS. Paris, Amyot, Henri Plon, 1856. 4 volumes in-8, ornate contemporary half-basecloth; bindings a little rubbed. Reprint of this second collective work, originally published from 1854 to 1856, with a fifth and final volume to be published in 1869, omitted here.
