EUGÉNIE (IMPERATRICE). - Lot 47
EUGÉNIE (IMPERATRICE). Set of 4 letters. 1872 and n.d. - To the wife of a marshal. Autograph letter signed. Camden Place to Chislehurst, "8 7bre". "My dear mariscalita ["little marshal" in Spanish], I cannot leave England without sending you the photographs you ask for. The news you give me, are indeed also those we receive from France, the hour of common justice, and I HOPE THAT THERE WILL SOON BE NO MORE DOUBT ABOUT THOSE WHO LOYALTY SERVED THEIR COUNTRY, ALL READY TO SACRIFICE, OR THOSE WHO MADE IT SERVE AS A MARCHEPIED TO THEIR AMBITION AND INTERESTS. Believe me, dear marshal, [there] cannot be two opinions, when passions are somewhat dampened. Our regards to the marshal, and believe in my affectionate sentiments...". (4 pp. in-12). - To "Madame André". Autograph letter signed. Camden Place to Chislehurst, April 6, 1872. "I have received, my dear..., the flowers you sent me and Madame Fleury kindly undertakes to convey with this little note all our thanks for your memory. It is more precious to me than ever today, and your sympathy, of which I was happy to receive the assurance, is one that consoles many a sadness. YOU WHO LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AGITATIONS OF THIS IMPRESSIONABLE CITY [PARIS], whose movements we can hardly keep up with, YOU WOULDN'T KNOW WITH WHAT AVIDITY we, who are far from it, RECEIVE THE ECHO OF ITS PREOCCUPATIONS AND ITS THOUGHTS, SOMETHING OF ITS SOUVENIR. This is our consolation, and the best, I assure you. We have had many visitors for some time, and I think that spring, which is the signal for the pleasures of London and the season, will also bring us some people..." (4 pp. in-12). - To Armand Béhic. Autograph letter signed. Camden Place in Chislehurst, "December 25" [probably 1872]. " ... We are about to begin another year; what will it bring. I HAVE LOST MY CONFIDENCE OF OTHERS, and I approach the unknown with fear. My best wishes..." (one p. in-8 oblong and one p. in-12, letterhead printed at his address, mourning border). The industrialist Armand Béhic (1809-1891) also had a political career, becoming a deputy under the July Monarchy, a senator and minister under the Empire, and then again a senator (Bonapartist) under the Third Republic. - To a "Highness". Letter signed. S.l., November 20, 1872. "I have received your letter on the occasion of my birthday [November 15], and I thank you sincerely for your good wishes for us. I deeply regret that new attempts at rapprochement have again failed between the young household. I would be very happy to see an end to such a sad position for two people so young and whose happiness is linked to that of their family. I'm afraid they're setting themselves up for a very troubled future. Nevertheless, I always hope that a favorable circumstance will put an end to these painful misunderstandings. I beg Your Highness to believe in all the sentiments with which I am, from Your Highness, the sincere friend and cousin..." (2 pp. 3/4 in-4, embossed letterhead with her crowned initial). Enclosed, an old press clipping giving the text of an open letter from Empress Eugenie about her regency of August-September 1871 and General Trochu's attitude.
