NAPOLEON III AND THE PRINCE IMPERIAL. - Lot 42
NAPOLEON III AND THE PRINCE IMPERIAL. 2 letters. August 1870. War had been declared on Prussia on July 19, 1870, and Napoleon III decided to go to the theater of operations accompanied by his son. Their departure took place on July 28, 1870: the Prince Imperial stood by his side at first, then, when setbacks made their joint presence too risky, the teenager was withdrawn to the rear. - NAPOLEON III. Autograph telegraphic dispatch signed at the top "L'Empereur", to his Minister of War. Paris, [late July or early August 1870]. "Your idea about the P[rince] trip is very good. But isn't it too late. He should pass through Besançon and be here on the 6th to leave on the 7th" (1/2 p. in-folio in very loose handwriting with ink stains and soiling; envelope with embossed imperial coat of arms from the Emperor's cabinet, addressed to the chief bailiff, Félix Vervoort). Prince Napoleon, son of Jérôme Bonaparte and therefore second in the order of dynastic succession, had returned hurriedly from his trip to Norway on hearing of the outbreak of war, and joined the French headquarters, but without obtaining a command. - PRINCE IMPERIAL. Autograph letter signed "Louis-Napoléon" to a lady. Reims, August 22, 1870. "I was deeply touched by the letter you were kind enough to write me, which I received just as I was leaving for Reims; for this reason, Madame, I apologize to you for not having been able to reply immediately. This new mark of affection shows me once again how good you are to me. I finish my letter BY THANKING YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR YOUR PRAYERS TO GOD FOR THE SUCCESS OF OUR ARMS. I am sure that, coming from you, they will not fail to bring us good luck...". (one p. 1/2 in-8).
