PRINCE IMPERIAL (LOUIS-NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, KNOWN AS LE). - Lot 41
PRINCE IMPERIAL (LOUIS-NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, KNOWN AS LE). Autograph letter signed "Louis-Napoléon" to Cardinal Lucien Bonaparte. S.l., January 1, 1870. 3/4 p. in-4, printed letterhead with his father's crowned initial, envelope with his father's crowned initial printed and handwritten mark "Le Prince Impérial". "My dear cousin, I thank you most sincerely for the wishes you send to Heaven for the Emperor, the Empress and me. In my turn, from the bottom of my heart, I form the most tender wishes for your happiness. I HAVE JUST WRITTEN TO OUR VERY HOLY FATHER TO EXPRESS TO HIM MY SENTIMENTS OF VENERATION and gratitude and to ask him for his precious blessings. Please accept, my dear cousin, the expression of my most affectionate feelings..." ATTACHED, THE AUTOGRAPH OF THE PRINCE IMPERIAL'S LETTER TO POPE PIE IX: "Most Holy Father, as a new year is about to begin, I come to offer Your Holiness my most respectful and sincere wishes for his preservation and happiness. At the same time, I wish to express to Your Holiness my deep gratitude for all the marks of kindness and affection she has already given me." Then, in pencil, the Prince inscribed the question "Couldn't we add something like this?", and the following proposal: "I hope, with the help of your precious prayers, Holy Father, to strengthen myself more and more in the habits of the Christian life" (one p. in-8, erasures and corrections). Another hand has written under the last paragraph: "very good".
