NAPOLEON III. - Lot 38
NAPOLEON III. Letter signed "Napoleon" to King Charles I of Württemberg. Palais des Tuileries, December 21, 1866. 3/4 p. folio, addressed on spine with 3 red wax seals (2 with imperial arms and one with the numeral "EI") and remnants of green silk ribbon. "Monsieur mon frère, IL A PLU A LA DIVINE PROVIDENCE DE BENIR LE MARIAGE DE MON BIEN-AIME COUSIN LE PRINCE NAPOLEON EN LUONNANT UNE FILLE dont madame la princesse Marie-Clotilde est heureusement accoucheée hier, 20 décembre 1866, et qui a reçu les noms de Marie Letizia Eugénie Catherine Adélaïde. You make me aware enough, on the occasions that arise, of how much you take part in everything that may concern the interests of my Crown, so that I am convinced that Your Majesty will wish to associate herself with my satisfaction. I am very pleased to have this opportunity to renew to you the assurances of the high esteem and inviolable friendship with which I am, Monsieur mon frère, of Your Majesty, the good brother, Napoleon". Son of King Jérôme Bonaparte (brother of Napoleon I), Prince Napoleon married Princess Marie-Clotilde of Savoy, daughter of the Duke of Savoy (who became King of Italy in 1861) and an Archduchess of Austria. Their third child, Marie-Letizia, would become Duchess of Aosta through her marriage. A grandnephew of Jerome Bonaparte, King Charles I of Württemberg fought on Austria's side in the Austro-Prussian War (June-August 1866), then, defeated, signed an alliance with Prussia and fought against France in the Franco-Prussian War.
