EUGÉNIE (IMPERATRICE). - Lot 28
EUGÉNIE (IMPERATRICE). Autograph letter signed to her "dear marshal". Palais des Tuileries, May 15, 1859. 3 pp. 3/4 in-8, embossed letterhead with her crowned initial. THE IMPERATRIX IN ANXIETY IN PARIS WHILE NAPOLEON III WAS PERSONALLY DIRECTING THE ITALIAN CAMPAIGN. "To tell you that I am in great need of news seems almost useless, and yet I have come to ask you for it, because I know that you will do everything you can to give me some. Time is very long when you live like we do, always anxious. I'M ONLY ROMAN IN APPEARANCE, I'M LIKE A BRAGGART, BY LYING TO OTHERS I END UP LYING TO MYSELF. Here, everything's fine, we've got our eyes on Italy, nothing [is] as interesting as what comes from there. HOWEVER, GERMANY IS MORE AND MORE THREATENING, they're like children, they sing when they're scared, I'm afraid we'll end up hearing them here. I don't need to tell you that I hope your return (as you promised) won't be long in coming. I envy you, though, for being here. IF MY DEAR LITTLE BOY DIDN'T RETAIN ME HERE, YOU'D HAVE ALREADY SEEN ME ARRIVE AS AN ORDINANCE OFFICER, but I also have a position of honor and must be content with that. I would be happy to finish my debut as soon as possible. Adieu, my dear marshal, believe in all my truly affectionate feelings... Tell these gentlemen that I expect them to fulfill their promise by keeping me informed. Toulongeon, Favé and Cadore have made a commitment to me for themselves and the others [staff colonel Edmond-Eugène de Toulongeon, and artillery lieutenant-colonel Ildefonse Favé, both aides-de-camp to Napoleon III and future generals; and naval lieutenant Camille de Nompère de Champagny, marquis de Cadore, officer-in-charge to Napoleon III, future duc de Cadore and future diplomat]."
