NAPOLEON III. - Lot 26
NAPOLEON III. Autograph telegraph dispatch signed at the top, addressed TO QUEEN VICTORIA. Palais de Saint-Cloud, "le 11 à 8 h." [August 1857]. 1/2 p. in-8, embossed letterhead with her crowned cipher. "The Emperor to H.M. the Queen of England at Osborne... We have just arrived after a very happy journey. LES SOUVENIRS D'OSBORNE NE NOUS QUITENT PAS, et nos regrets sont aussi vifs que nos sentimens de reconnaissance pour le cordial accueil de V[otre] M[ajesté], du Prince et de sa charmante famille." FRANCO-BRITISH FRIENDSHIP AND CLOSE NEGOTIATIONS ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT. Initially regarded with suspicion by England, Napoleon III adopted a foreign policy whose keystone was to be joint action with the English. Ties between the two countries were strengthened in particular during the Crimean War (1853-1855), and Napoleon III's relations with Queen Victoria also took a friendly turn: the Emperor visited London and Windsor in April 1855, for example, and the Queen in return visited the Paris World's Fair in August of the same year. Then, from August 6 to 9, 1857, Napoleon III, accompanied by Empress Eugenie, visited Osborne on the Isle of Wight, where he and his host discussed the Romanian question vis-à-vis the Turks. Guided by the desire to establish a lasting peace in Europe based on the principle of nationality, he worked to unify the Danube provinces, then vassals of the Ottoman Empire, and the Osborne meeting was a decisive step towards the creation of modern Romania.
