One p. in-8, address on spine, tear due to opening of address leaf without damage to text. LETTER FROM PRISON. "Colonel, in a letter you kindly wrote to me nearly a year ago, YOU PROPOSED A WORK ON HOLLAND ARTILLERY IN THE 17th CENTURY CONTAINING GOOD PRACTICES OF GUN PARTS. I have come to ask you for them, always counting on the kindness of which you have given me so many proofs. My first volume is being printed, and I hope it will appear in two months' time...". PRINCE LOUIS NAPOLEON-BONAPARTE, ARTILLERY OFFICER AND HISTORIAN OF HIS ARM. He was a student at the Swiss artillery school in Thun during the winter of 1831-1832, and published several works on the subject, including a Manuel de l'artillerie à l'usage des officiers d'artillerie de la République helvétique (1836), a Histoire du canon dans les armées modernes (1848), and above all Études sur le passé et l'avenir de l'artillerie. This last work occupied many hours of his time in Ham prison, between 1840 and 1846, and led him to seek information from a wide variety of people. The Prince published two volumes of his studies in 1846 and 1851, and then let General Ildefonse Favé complete the work, publishing volumes III and IV in 1862 and 1863. On his imprisonment in Ham, see no. 14 above. Bruno Renard (1804-1879), a future general and Minister of War of the Kingdom of Belgium, was then colonel of the general staff, and also published several volumes of military history.
