NAPOLEON III - Lot 14
NAPOLEON III (LOUIS-NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, FUTURE). Autograph letter signed "Napoléon Louis B." addressed to JULIETTE RECAMIER. Ham Fortress, June 29, 1842. One p. 1/2 in-8, address on spine; trace of tab in margin of first page. LETTER FROM PRISON: the future Napoleon III was confined to Ham prison after his second unsuccessful coup attempt in Boulogne in 1840, and remained there until his escape in 1846. He was able to maintain an important social life, receiving numerous visits and keeping up an extensive correspondence. "You are very good to have taken the trouble to acknowledge receipt of the brochure I took the liberty of sending you [no doubt his Analyse de la question des sucres, published in 1842]. It has long been my wish to thank you for the kind visit you made to me at the Conciergerie; I have retained a grateful memory of it, and I am happy to find here the opportunity to express my feelings of gratitude. PLEASE BE SO KIND, MADAME, AS TO GIVE THE ENCLOSED LETTER TO MONSIEUR DE CHATEAUBRIAND, WHOSE BENEVOLENT INTEREST HAS TOUCHED ME DEEPLY. You are so accustomed to making all those who approach you happy that you will not be surprised at the pleasure I felt in receiving proof of your sympathy and learning that you are willing to sympathize with my sorrows...".
