DESBORDES-VALMORE (MARCELINE). - Lot 11
DESBORDES-VALMORE (MARCELINE). 3 autograph letters signed. 1835-1855. - To a man of her acquaintance. S.l., January 16, 1834. "Sir, the delicate way in which you treat [me] removes even the thought of evading it. I accept it, with all the gratitude it imposes on me and makes me forever your humble and obliged servant..." (one p. in-12). - To Alexis Singier. S.l.n.d. "My good Alexis, I have just seen Alibert [Doctor Jean-Louis Alibert, 1768-1837], who has squeezed me to the heart, and who has promised me everything, which at least he can! Your nephew can come to him at once, he will be received and served by this good baron, who wants to use his convalescence to do good. I am only too happy to be able to show you a little of all the gratitude and affection my sick heart contains for you and all that touches you... I kiss you for my dear Valmore and for myself..." (2 pp. in-12, address on spine, small tear to address leaf due to opening without damage to text). Alexis Singier (1775-1847) directed theaters in Toulouse, Marseille, Nice, Béziers, Narbonne, Lyon (for the longest time), and Paris, where he managed the Opéra-Comique for a short time, before finally retiring, while serving on the reading committee of the Odéon theater and as vice-president of the Association des artistes dramatiques founded by Baron Taylor. - To a lady. S.l., November 30, 1855. "I have been moved by your letter for too long to reply. At this very moment when I have decided to ask your forgiveness for my strange silence, I have not acquired the courage to press the dear and terrible cause of my despondency. But I have no doubt that you have within you all it takes to understand and pity it! The touching grace of your spirit, if it hadn't passed through your heart, wouldn't have such power over incurable despair. For my part, Madame, all words are vain to pity me, alas! As were my prayers... I only want you to know that I am as incapable of forgetting your letter as I am of answering it, begging you to regard these confused but ardent lines as a tender handshake from the saddest woman in the world, who greets you with all her soul... VEUILLEZ GARDER, EN ACTION DE GRACE DE VOS CHARMANS VERS, DEUX PETITS VOLUMES QUE J'AVAIS ECRITS DANS DES TEMS DE SOURIRES, EFFACES A JAMAIS comme vous le pressentez, Madame!" (2 pp. 1/2 in-8).
