1968 MERCEDES-BENZ 280 SL "PAGODE - Lot 69
1968 MERCEDES-BENZ 280 SL "PAGODE Serial number 11304412022443 Only two owners in 45 years With soft-top and hard-top 2/3-seater registration French registration "Pagoda" is the nickname of the Mercedes-Benz SL W113 convertibles built between 1963 and 1972. It's due to the distinctive shape of its hardtop. The Pagoda's mission was not an easy one: it had to replace the 190 SL and 300 SL and make them forget about each other. March 1967 saw the launch of the new 280 SL, the big sister of the 230 SL and 250 SL which had appeared in 1963 and 1966 respectively. This magnificent cabriolet will go down in automotive history as one of the masterpieces of talented French stylist Paul Bracq. Reliable and usable in everyday life even today, this range is in keeping with the image of quality and robustness that has always defined Mercedes-Benz. This Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagode was launched on November 06, 1968. Its history can be traced back to 1978. That year, it was acquired by a Mercedes enthusiast. He kept it and drove it regularly until 1996, when it was acquired by its current owner. The current owner drove the car for several years before having the engine, upholstery and injection system rebuilt. The car has never been restored, and deserves a paint job to bring it up to today's standards. We drove this beautiful Mercedes back to our office from Paris. The 70 kilometers revealed a pleasant car, with good gearshifts and precise steering. However, as the car has been driven very little over the last two years, it will need servicing to enable it to tackle a long journey with peace of mind. It is extremely rare to find a French 280SL with the mechanical gearbox in its original condition.
