1959 PORSCHE 356 Convertible D - Lot 44
1959 PORSCHE 356 Convertible D Series: 86307 Engine number 73931 Matching numbers and color Original booklet Total restoration Collector's registration After the Second World War, the future belonged to small, economical cars, and modern sports cars were largely based on them. The first Porsche established itself as an archetypal sports car. Historically, the Porsche 356 was the first sports car manufactured and marketed by Porsche. Conceived by Ferry Porsche on the mechanical basis of the Volkswagen and designed by Erwin Komenda, it was produced from 1948 to 1965. The 356 was originally available as a coupé and a cabriolet, then at Hoffmann's request a Speedster version was created. Most versions took part in competitions, and its track record is impressive. The 356 is well-built, reliable, light and agile. It would be the first to assert "Porsche" quality. This Porsche 356 was completely different from the other cars of the time, and this surely explains its success. In the United States, this difference took on particular significance, as there was a real opposition between the American and the 356. As a result, it won over Americans and conquered the overseas market. Although the Speedster version was popular, some criticized its basic comfort, notably its low windshield and impractical retractable windows. So, in 1959, it was replaced by the new Convertible D, with similar styling but more refined and practical finishes. These included a windscreen with chrome surround typical of "special" Porsche 356 cabriolets, higher up to provide better protection from the wind, and a soft top offering more space. The interior is also more luxurious, with more comfortable seats and glass windows that can be retracted using a classic crank system. The Porsche 356 Convertible D is one of the rarest production Porsche 356s, with only 1,330 produced in a single year. Delivered new to Hoffman in June 1959, this 356 was fully restored in the USA between 1989 and 1990. In 2009, the car was repainted in its original Meissen Blue color. Today, the car is in immaculate condition, with bucket seats inside and a set of original leather sports seats. It comes complete with tools, notebooks and custom-made luggage. In near-perfect condition, this car is ready for long journeys. 1959 PORSCHE 356 Convertible D Series: 86307 Engine number 73931 Matching numbers and color Original booklet Total restoration Collector's registration card After the Second World War, the future belonged to small, economical cars, and modern sports cars were largely based on them.
