Handwritten copy of a letter from Marie-Anne-Charlotte Corda - Lot 146
Handwritten copy of a letter from Marie-Anne-Charlotte Corday, signed and dated July 15, 1793 "Since I still have a few moments to live, could I hope, Citizens, that you would allow me to be painted, I would like to leave this mark of my memory to my friends". In this letter, written on July 15, 1793, two days after the assassination of Jean Paul Marat, Charlotte Corday requests that her portrait be painted before her execution. In the same document, she also cleared Fauchet of complicity. A portrait was indeed painted by Jean Jacques Hauer on July 17, the day before her execution, and is preserved today at the Château de Versailles (MV 4615).
