Death of Louis XVII - Lot 145
Death of Louis XVII Handwritten copies by Beauchesne concerning the death of Louis XVII. Mid-19th century. Set of four letters including: - (1) Letter from the Comité de sureté générale signed by Claude Alexandre Ysabeau's secretary. "The Committee of General Safety, informed by reports from the guardians of the Infant Capet that he is suffering from an indisposition and infirmities that appear to be of a serious nature, orders that the first officer of the Hospice d'Humanité will go to the sick man to visit him and administer the necessary remedies (...)". - (2) Letter from Etienne de Lasne, Louis XVII's last guardian at the Temple prison, addressed to Alcide de Beauchesne. Paris, October 21, 1837. "I hereby declare on my honor and before God that the son of Louis XVI died in my arms in the Temple tower. Only impostors can claim the contrary (...) All my life I have told the truth, and it is not when I come to the end (?) that I will betray it". COMMISSAIRE PREPOSE A LA GARDE DE LA TOUR DU TEMPLE, ETIENNE LASNE (1857-1841), came from a military family. As a witness to the death of Louis XVII, he spoke out against "false dolphins". In 1837, contacted by Alcide de Beauchesne, he confirmed his statements. - (3) Minutes signed by "Picavez, Renard, Damoureau, Leblanc and Dubois" to the Archives Nationales attesting to the burial of Louis XVII. "The corpse of Louis Capet we recognized whole, in all its limbs, the head being separated from the trunk. We noticed that the hair on the back of the head had been cut off, and that the corpse was without tie, clothes or shoes. In addition, he was dressed in a shirt, a quilted vest, grey breeches and a pair of grey silk stockings. - (4) Letter signed by Jollivet to the police disputing the need for security measures following the death of Louis XVII. "Vu la lettre de la Commission administrative de Police en date du 2e de ce mois, dans laquelle elle demande que les comités civils soient dispensés d'envoyer chaque jour un de leurs membres au Temple; 1. Because this service is very expensive 2. Parce qu'elle les détourne de leurs occupations, 3 parce que le décès du fils de Louis Capet parait rendre cette préoccupation moins utile ".
