The Type 21, Peugeot's first coupé, dates back to 1898. Launched in May 1960, the 404 was Sochaux's reaction to the 1955 presentation of the Citroën DS, which had dazzled everyone with its technical advances. Presented in May 1960, the Peugeot 404 entered the 9 HP (1.6 liter) category, a notch above the 403 it was to replace. Peugeot's move upmarket continued, keeping pace with the rising standard of living in France during this happy period of strong growth. In 1962, Peugeot unveiled the 404 coupé. Like many 404s, this one spent a long time on the roads of France, before being retired in 1995 after 30 years of loyal service. Thanks to the history of technical inspections, we know that this 404 had only 95,000 km when it was stopped. It was only in 2016 that the car was rediscovered in a sound condition and restored. All the mechanics were rebuilt, as was the upholstery, the chrome was changed or renovated, and the bodywork was revised before being repainted.
