1961 ALPINE A108 COUPE 2+2 Serial number:... - Lot 46 - Osenat
1961 ALPINE A108 COUPE 2+2 Serial number: 1124 Chappe et Gessalin bodywork number: 521 Color: REDELE yellow Power : 5cv Registration date : 15/6/1961 FRENCH REGISTRATION 8 000 / 12 000 In 1960, Jean Rédélé decided to end production of the first Alpine, the A106, designed and built by the Chappe brothers and Gessalin, with the Alpine A108, built entirely on rue Pasteur in Dieppe, taking over. His father-in-law, Charles Escoffier, who had a very good relationship with these Saint Maur coachbuilders, insisted on continuing the partnership. Chappe and Gessalin then proposed a 2+2 coupé, less sporty than the berlinettes or cabriolets, but more livable: this would be the A108 coupé 2+2, presented in autumn 1960. The wheelbase was that of the R8, a little longer than that of the berlinette, and the beam was bolted into the body rather than sealed in. The front end is rounded, with large headlight bubbles and a Florida-style windscreen. The rear is sharper in line, with pointed fenders and a prominent hood due to the radiator. The powertrain is that of the Renault Dauphine, in 850cc displacement. The tubular bumpers were soon replaced by attractive solid aluminum parts. This model remained confidential: an estimated 70 examples were produced, until the entire rear section was transformed on a drawing by Jean Rédélé in early 1963 to accommodate the R8's 5-bearing Cléon cast-iron engine, resulting in the A110 GT4, of which around 280 were built. The Alpine A108 coupé 2+2 presented here bears the serial number 1124, bodywork 521 of June 1961. It would thus be the 21st built by CG. The beautiful Rédélé yellow color adorns it. Purchased by Mr. R. from Mr. Roger Soleil near Clermont Ferrand on November 9, 1988, it appears to have remained in his hangar ever since. It is complete, which is important for this confidential model, but it needs a good restoration. Few more than thirty A108 2+2s still exist today, so it's extremely rare to see one for sale, and this one is quite complete, with its rare aluminum bumpers. This A108 is a reasonably priced entry into the world of Alpine, with a little-known model that smacks of the late '50s with its little rear wings! We would like to thank specialist Gilles VALLERIAN, student expert and member of the Chambre Nationale des Experts Spécialisés (CNES), for his help with the history of this car. 10/15,000 euros 1961 ALPINE A108 COUPE 2+2 Serial number: 1124 Chappe et Gessalin bodywork number: 521 Color: REDELE yellow Power: 5hp Registration date: 15/6/1961 FRENCH TITLE 8 000 / 12 000 In 1960, Jean Rédélé decided to end production of the first Alpine, the A106, designed and built by the Chappe brothers and Gessalin.
