The pin cushion at Aoyama, Japan -
Print from the "36 views of Fuji" series - Fugaku sanjûrokkei.
Sheet size : 19.5 x 29 cm,
Publisher : Yuyudo , period : 1960's.
The artist depicts the gardens of the Ryûganji Zen temple in Edo. A group of pilgrims are picnicking, while a man walks along with a child to whom he shows the volcano. In this print, Hokusai demonstrates his attention to detail and his taste for geometric forms. He plays on the contrast between the two masses that dominate the composition: in the foreground, the round vegetation like a large cushion; the hieratic Mount Fuji in the background.
