MONET (Claude). Autograph letter signed "Claude... - Lot 19 - Osenat
MONET (Claude). Autograph letter signed "Claude Monet" to Jean-Baptiste Faure. Giverny (Eure), August 26, 1889. 22 pp. 1/3 in-8. It was Claude Monet who had the greatest part in the campaign intended to have Édouard Manet's painting Olympia purchased by subscription and then to have it accepted by the State for the Louvre: initiated in 1889, this campaign ended in 1890, and if Olympia was first kept in the Musée du Luxembourg, it finally entered the Louvre in 1907. "My dear Faure, I have come to ask you if you would like to take part in THE SUBSCRIPTION WE ARE MAKING BETWEEN FRIENDS AND ADMIRATORS OF MANET TO BUY MANET'S OLYMPIA AND OFFER IT TO THE LOUVRE. We would be very happy to count you among us for this artistic event. I know that this painting of Manet is not your favorite but if we chose it, it is especially BECAUSE IT BELONGS TO MADAME MANET TO WHOM WE WANT TO DISCREETLY HELP AND ALSO BECAUSE IT WAS MANET'S PREFERRED PAINTING. It is a beautiful homage to pay to the artist and I hope that you will give me a favorable answer. Please tell me for what sum I should subscribe you, I send you the list of subscriptions to date. My best compliments. All yours..." Attached, an autograph letter signed by Raffaele Giannetti and 2 letters (one autograph signed, one autograph) from Joseph Dupoy de Guittard.
