JOUHANDEAU (Marcel). Correspondence with André Gide. Paris, Marcel Sautier, 1958. In-16, 89-(7 of which the last 3 are blank) pp. in black morocco with green veins, smooth spine, large mosaic decoration of glazed paper pieces as well as marquetry in shades of green decorating the boards, the back covers and the endpapers, gilt edges, lined case (L. Gérard). FIRST EDITION, ONE OF THE 20 COPIES OF HEAD NUMBERED ON CHINE. AUTOGRAPHIC SENTENCE SIGNED BY MARCEL JOUHANDEAU : " For Robert Moureau. Dear friend, it would have been necessary to see us together, Gide and I, like the cat and the dog of the house, who get along, but without forgetting that they belong to two species whose shores have almost nothing in common. Kind regards... March 10, 1958." EXAMPLE OF A PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF ANDRE GIDE ANNOTATED BY MARCEL JOUHANDEAU (postcard size print), taken in Corsica at Saint-Florent during the summer of 1930, probably by Georges Noguès: André Gide is represented near a donkey, in company of the boxer Billy Balzac and Sam Quinchon, companion of Georges Noguès. The print, here mounted in the front, has been annotated by Marcel Jouhandeau, on the front ("Gide", "the donkey", "Sam Quinchon"), and on the back: "Gide and the donkey. This dialogue is worth a correspondence. March 10, 1958. I was not in the game." Mounted at the end of the volume is a publisher's prospectus in which the present work is listed, among other things.
