BEAUVAIS Important tapestry with the arms... - Lot 245 - Osenat
BEAUVAIS Important tapestry with the arms of France and Navarre, composed of elements of the XVIIIth century of the Royal Manufacture of Beauvais and restored at the end of the XIXth. One discovers various fables of La Fontaine as well as a signature JB Oudry, 1736 (year of the realization of a suite of tapestry on the topic of the fables of La Fontaine by Oudry in the manufacture of Beauvais). Signed JB Oudry and dated 1736 H. 271 cm x L. 538 cm (Wear, partial tears and old restorations). Provenance : Colasanti Casa d'Aste Roma sale of October 19, 2022, Da Importanti Collezioni Romane, Important Roman Collections and appears on the front cover of the sale catalog. Comments: The tapestry has been seen by Mrs Elisabeth FLORET, expert near the Court of Appeal of Versailles, who confirmed that the tapestry is certainly composed in part of elements of the XVIIIth century (including the signature) but has been largely restored in the second part of the XIXth century, in order to allow its conservation and the overall maintenance of the ancient elements that compose it. The restoration is nevertheless visually and stylistically consistent with the series of tapestries by Oudry, made in Beauvais in 1736 (see attached photos) and of which no trace remains today. The three fables which appear most distinctly are : The Lion and the Boar, The Two Roosters, The Wolf pleading against the Fox before the Monkey. - The Lion and the Boar is a fable by Aesop which is a source of inspiration for the majority of La Fontaine's fables and which can be found in the fable "The Lion and the Donkey Hunting", which is by La Fontaine - The Two Roosters is a fable by Jean de La Fontaine which has for source "The Two Roosters and the Eagle" by Aesop - The Wolf pleading against the Fox before the Monkey is an original creation by La Fontaine
