CHARLES PIERRE VERHULST (1775-1820) "Portrait of Joseph Antoine Joseph Chambarlhac, squadron leader in the 1st regiment of horsemen, knight of the Legion of Honor. (To be cleaned) With photograph of an engraving of the biography of General Chambarlhac de Laubespin History: This portrait was thought to be of General Jacques Antoine Chambarlhac de Laubespin (1754-1826). However, the uniform and the general aspect of the subject do not correspond. It is in fact his son Jean Antoine Chambarlhac (1778-1825), a volunteer in the battalion of the Haute Loire in the year II, wounded at the siege of Toulon, he started to serve in the cavalry under the Consulate and did the campaigns of the Empire in the 8th regiment of cuirassiers, in the 5th dragoons and then in the 10th and the 1st regiment of horse hunters Knight of the Legion of Honor, he was promised the officer's cross by the Emperor on January 24, 1814. He was mistakenly appointed a second time as a knight. Biography : Born into a family of painters, Charles-Pierre Verhulst (1774-1820) trained with his father, Pierre Antoine Verhulst, and then at the Antwerp Academy, before moving to Brussels, where he acquired a solid reputation as a portraitist and teacher.
