MACKAU (Renée-Suzanne de). Autograph letter... - Lot 8 - Osenat
MACKAU (Renée-Suzanne de). Autograph letter signed to the count Antoine-Marie-François Tonduti de L'Escarène, general secretary of the ministry of the Interior. Paris, July 23, 1818. 1 p. in-folio, address on the back. RECOMMENDATION IN FAVOR OF A FORMER GUARD OF LOUIS XVI. "I dare to hope that, although I do not have the honor of being known to you, my title of former sub-governor of the children of France will merit the confidence that I desire to inspire in a recommendation in favor of the estimable household that I have the honor of recommending to you, Monsieur le Comte. The woman is a compatriot, she is German [Renée-Suzanne de Mackau was Alsatian]. We spent a few months together when the king returned. Her husband is a former guard of the military house of the late King Louis XVI. A letter that he will have the honor of putting before your eyes will prove the PATERNAL INTEREST THAT HIS MAJESTY LOUIS SEIZE DID DEEM TO TAKE IN HIS TRUSTED GUARDS. In spite of this title, sacred for this brave and faithful soldier, he could not obtain any pension. His wife wishes to take him to her country to live more cheaply. They wish to obtain relief to be able to return home. Please, Sir, I beg you to be favorable to them with His Excellency your minister. If I had not been ill for a year, I would have had the honor of asking you myself to see you. I have the honor of being a lady of charity. I am therefore infinitely too familiar with the picture of misfortune. I would like with all my soul to sympathize with it, but I MYSELF LOST ALL MY FORTUNE TO THE REVOLUTION AND I CANNOT DO ALL THAT MY HEART DICTAINS ME! FORMER SUB-GOVERNOR OF THE CHILDREN OF FRANCE, RENÉE-SUZANNE DE MACKAU, then widow of the Marquis de Soucy, performed these duties from 1781 to 1792 alongside her mother Marie-Angélique de Fitte de Soucy, Baroness de Mackau, with the four children of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette of Austria: Louis-Joseph (first Dauphin, died in 1789), Louis-Charles (second Dauphin and future Louis XVII), Marie-Thérèse ("Madame Royale") and Sophie-Béatrice ("Madame Sophie"). She followed Madame Royale into exile in Austria before returning to France in 1796.
