LOUIS XVII (Louis-Charles de France, future).... - Lot 6 - Osenat
LOUIS XVII (Louis-Charles de France, future). Autograph piece. [About 1790]. One page in-4. TOUCHY WRITING PAGE WHERE THE CHILD EXERCISED SIGNING HIS NAME on 5 lines, with a few penciled attempts interpolated in the line spaces. This still awkward handwriting must date from the very beginning of the Dolphin's learning. THE FUTURE MARTYR OF THE TEMPLE PRISON. Born on March 27, 1785, Louis-Charles de France became Dauphin upon the death of his older brother Louis-Joseph in 1789. He was incarcerated with his parents on August 13, 1792 in the Temple prison, became king in power there in January 1793 upon the death of Louis XVI, and died there himself on June 8, 1795 - at the age of 10. VERY RARE: the Children of France, Louis-Joseph and Louis-Charles had for writing master Pierre-Louis Sourdon Dumesnil de Saint-Cyr (1763-1845). The latter had kept several assignments written by the hand of his royal pupils. Only three other documents of the same kind have so far turned up. Provenance: Arthur MEYER (Paris, Drouot, Francisque Lefrançois et Noël Charavay experts, June 3-6, 1924, n° 129/autographs-1°).
