LOIZEROLLES (Jean-Simon and François-Simon... - Lot 5 - Osenat
LOIZEROLLES (Jean-Simon and François-Simon Aved de). - 2 letters, one from the father and one from the son. PATERNAL SACRIFICE DURING THE "CONSPIRACY OF THE PRISONS". Lawyer at the Parliament of Paris and lieutenant-general of the bailiwick of the artillery of France, at the Arsenal, Jean-Simon Aved de Loizerolles (1732-1794) was imprisoned as a suspect with his younger son François-Simon, chevalier de Loizerolles (1872-1845). While the revolutionary power took the pretext of "conspiracies" in the prisons to execute prisoners, the son was sentenced to death but the father asked to take his place. The father was thus guillotined on the eve of the 9th Thermidor (!) alongside 29 other victims, including Jean-Sylvain Bailly's secretary, the Marquis d'Usson, the two Trudaine brothers, the Princess of Monaco... The Chevalier de Loizerolles distinguished himself in letters, and published many verse pieces, including one in 1813 in homage to his father, La Mort de Loizerolles, which was published again by Dondey-Dupré in 1828. This sad episode remained emblematic of the Terror: it was chosen for the subject of several prints, under the Empire and the Restoration, was treated in 1830 by Auguste-Anicet Bourgeois in his drama Robespierre ou le 9 thermidor, and was still recalled by Stendhal in his Souvenirs d'égotisme (work written in 1832) or by Victor Hugo in Les Misérables (1862). - LOIZEROLLES (Jean Simon Aved de). Autograph letter signed. S.l., November 12, 1771. 1 p. in-4. Professional missive dealing with the affairs of the duchy of Albret, within the framework of the succession of the duke of Bouillon: Godefroy-Charles-Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, duke of Bouillon and Albret, had just, in October 1771, succeeded his father Charles-Godefroy. - LOIZEROLLES (François-Simon Aved de). Autograph letter signed to Pierre Daru. Paris, May 15, 1829. 2 pp. in-4. " ...I continue to publish a new edition of the poem La Mort de Loizerolles. This poem, rather because of the subject than because of my weak talents obtained a great success a few years ago. The king, the princes and the princesses of the royal family subscribed for a great number of copies. This poem is preceded by a notice on M. de Loizerolles. This poem is decorated with his portrait according to a drawing drawn in Saint-Lazare in 1794. It is followed by the mass of the dead at Picpus, poetry in honor of the martyrs of Robespierre's regime, a collection of elegies, and historical notes. The Count de Sèze, peer of France, first president of the Court of Cassation, had kindly accepted the dedication. AS M. DE LOIZEROLLES WAS ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING VICTIMS OF THE REVOLUTION, ALLOW ME TO TELL YOU ABOUT THIS PAINFUL EVENT. My father, my mother and I were locked up in the prison of Saint-Lazare. I WAS INCLUDED IN A LIST OF DEFENDANTS OF CONSPIRACY. But by the effect of the barbaric eagerness that the terrorists put to remove the victims intended to appear at the revolutionary Court, it was my unhappy father and not me that the satellites to the orders of the court of blood dragged to the Conciergerie. M. de Loizerolles was not long in realizing the mistake of his executioners by reading the indictment in which I was designated by my name, my first names and my age. THEN MY GENEROUS FATHER IMPLORED AND OBTAINED THE CRUEL FAVOR OF BEING CONDEMNED AND OF PERISHING IN MY PLACE. I count a great number of subscribers whose names are not printed on a particular list. Among them, I am honored to gather Messrs. the Chancellor of France, the Keeper of the Seals, the Vice-Chancellor, all the ministers, in particular the Minister of the Interior who subscribed for fifty copies, several marshals, and a great number of peers of France. I dare to hope, Monsieur le Comte, that you will also have the goodness to subscribe to the poem of La Mort de Loizerolles for a certain number of copies... I have the honor to be, Monsieur le Comte, with respect, your very humble and very obedient servant the Chevalier de Loizerolles, author of the poems of the Martyrdom of Louis XVI, of the Death of Mgr le Duc de Berry, of the Baptism of Mgr le Duc de Bordeaux, of Spain Delivered, of the Funeral of Louis XVIII and of the Coronation of Charles X, which have obtained several editions." PIERRE DARU (1767-1829), a former minister of NAPOLEON I, was the author of several works of literature and history, and was admitted to the French Academy. It was he who launched the career of his cousin Stendhal.
