[VIEILH DE VARENNE (Raymond-Augustin). [Entire... - Lot 20 - Osenat
[VIEILH DE VARENNE (Raymond-Augustin). [Entire collection of the flags of the Parisian national army. Paris, the author, 1790]. Plates in-4 mounted on folios bound in one volume in cherry-colored chagrin decorated with gilt and cold decoration of rocaille and floral motifs with revolutionary emblems; corners worn, boards sunned (binding of the 1840s). 2.000/3.000 COLLECTION OF 60 ENGRAVED PLATES ON COPPER (22 x 16 cm) AND HAND COLORED, a little trimmed and pasted on sheets of paper at the time of the binding, under serpents. Without the engraved frontispiece after Moreau le Jeune. Sponsor and probable author of the collection, Raymond-Augustin Vieilh de Varenne, general guard of the demolitions of the Bastille, offered a copy to the National Assembly on October 7, 1790, accompanied by a letter that was read during the session of that day. Numbered according to the division of Paris in force since April 1789, the plates represent the flags of each district, each supported by a National Guard whose attitude and physiognomy also vary each time. The symbols displayed by these flags are very diverse, mixing revolutionary emblems with monarchical, religious and patriotic signs. RARE WITNESS ON THESE FLAGS which were destroyed in application of the law of August 27, 1792 ordering the suppression of all insignia reminding the Old Regime. Also very rare, two other collections keep the memory of it, in presentations different from this one: Description curieuse et intéressante des soixante drapeaux [...], with atlas directly inspired by the work of Vielh de Varenne (whose name is mentioned), and Collection complète des drapeaux [...]. COPY WITH EXCEPTIONALLY FRESH COLORS. Tourneux, vol. II, no. 6712.
