[JANINET (Jean-François). [Historical engravings... - Lot 4 - Osenat
[JANINET (Jean-François). [Historical engravings of the main events since the opening of the States General of 1789. In Paris, at Janinet, Cussac, 1789-1791]. Collection of plates bound in one volume of red morocco, spine ribbed, partitioned and decorated with gilt revolutionary motifs with blue and white title-pieces, mosaic decoration of blue, white and red pieces on the boards with gilt revolutionary motifs in the center, ornamented edges, blue silk linings in a white and red morocco frame, blue silk endpapers, gilt head; small wetness on the first cover (Gruel). 12.000/15.000 A VERY RARE ENGRAVED SUITE, ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL DOCUMENTING THE BEGINNING OF THE REVOLUTION. Announced in the Gazette de France of January 26, 1790, it appeared in weekly issues between the end of 1789 and the beginning of 1791. Each issue included a plate accompanied by a short explanatory text, and appeared together in the format in-8 on laid paper, in-4 on laid paper or on vellum, in black and white or shortly after in color. This publication was interrupted before it was completed. Jean-François Janinet published at the same time the first volume of a Code national, or Loix décrétées par l'Assemblée nationale, also interrupted. IT INCLUDES 55 PLATES, THAT IS : - 54 COVERS IN LAVIS MANNER, engraved with etching and aquatint, printed on laid leaves of in-8 format (except one double page mounted on tabs), COLOR IMPROVED WITH AQUAREL, mounted on tabs on modern leaves, - and a woodcut in black representing a profile of La Fayette obtained with a physionotrace. ONE OF THE MOST COMPLETE COPIES KNOWN. The collection of historical engravings should ideally include 52 plates, but most copies are incomplete. The BnF has all the plates but in several collections, and the copy of Georges Haumont, who was curator of the Musée de Céramique de Sèvres from 1927 to 1942, contained 54 plates including 2 additional plates. Here, in addition to the 52 plates, are 3 ADDITIONAL PLATES, printed on laid paper in-8 and enhanced with colors : Event of July 15, 1789. Louis XVI. leaving the National Assembly returns on foot to the castle; "Event of September 7, 1789. Several citizens of Paris, carrying to the National Assembly, their jewels and their diamonds; and a second composition of the scene representing the charge of the prince of Lambesc on July 12, 1789. It is moreover exceptionally enriched the following pieces: - 28 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS USED IN THE ENGRAVING, FROM THE FORMER HENRI BERALDI COLLECTION (India ink, pen and wash, on laid paper sheets mounted on mitre): inverted designs of the etchings, sometimes annotated with instructions for printing. - 42 EPREUVES IN BLACK printed on strong wove paper in-4, directly bound in the volume. ONE OF THE SPECIALISTS OF "ACTUALITY ENGRAVING", THE DRAWER AND ENGRAVER JEAN-FRANÇOIS JANINET (1752-1814), is the author of an innovative technical approach to engraving known as "manière de lavis", mixing etching and aquatint, which he successfully applied to report on revolutionary events. Bound at the head and end of the volume are several printed documents, mounted on tabs on sheets of modern paper except for one directly bound: the upper and lower covers of the first issue and the upper cover of the 19th issue; 3 notices to subscribers; a prospectus for several of Janinet's publications including the present collection; a copy of the title page, from the print run on strong vellum paper, in-4 format. Bnf, Inventaire du fonds français, graveurs du XVIIIe siècle, n° 12; Philippe de Carbonnières, Les Gravures historiques de Janinet. Paris, Musée Carnavalet, 2011; Monglond, vol. I, col. 39-42 (which does not indicate that the effigy of La Fayette is woodcut); L'Art de l'estampe et la Révolution française, Paris, Musée Carnavalet, 1977, p. 33 ("Few interpretative engravings have equaled it in technical perfection"); Tourneux, vol. I, no. 288.
