JEAN BESNARD (1889-1958) "The Japanese woman Anthropomorphic... - Lot 33 - Osenat
JEAN BESNARD (1889-1958) "The Japanese woman Anthropomorphic sculpture, face with slanted eyes in ceramic glazed white smoked black Signed and dated 1930 Height : 23,5 cm - Diameter : 12,5 cm Note : Around 1930, inspired by Brancusi or Modigliani as well as by the exoticism typical of art deco creations, Jean Besnard sculpted Noh theater masks, and very rarely whole heads as here both incredibly expressive and simplistic. The shades of grey smoke and the play on the thickness of the material of our sculpture evoke, here, the white face of the actors of the Noh ritual theater. Jean Besnard's ceramics are held in numerous collections, including those of the Musée National de la Céramique de Sèvres, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris. They are also present in large private collections dedicated to Art Deco such as those of Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. Our "japonaise" was acquired in the 1930's by the grandparents of the current owner and had, since then, taken place in the large living room of the family apartment in Paris.
