Attributed to Alexander ROSLIN (1718 - 1793) - Lot 101
Attributed to Alexander ROSLIN (1718 - 1793) Presumed portrait of Jean François Bergeret seigneur de Frouville Oval canvas Height : 63 cm Width : 53,5 cm On the reverse, on the canvas, stenciled inscription: Jean François / Bergeret / Seigneur de Frouville / Ecuyer Cler of the King / in his Councils / Ordinary Secretary / to the Council of State / direction and finances / + the 28 8bre 1783 / at the castle of / Frouville. A label: Hocquart family On the frame, an old label: Mre. Jean François Berger [and] / Squire, Lord of Frouville, Con(...) / of the King in His Councils, Secretary ordi[naire] / to the Council of State, direction and finance / died on 28.8bre.173. at the castle of Frouville annotations on the back of the canvas and the frame Related work: Self-Portrait, ca. 1785, canvas, 29.5 x 23 cm, Stockholm, Nationalmuseum, NM 7004. Our painting is to be compared with the painting kept in the Stockholm museum, considered, perhaps wrongly, as a self-portrait: indeed, comparisons with other known self-portraits of the artist, such as Self-portrait of 1790 (canvas, 102 x 79 cm, Malmo Art Museum), would invalidate this appellation self-portrait. The traditional identification of our painting seems more plausible: it would be Jean-François Bergeret, whose friendship with Roslin is attested by his presence as a witness at the wedding of the artist's eldest daughter, Augustine-Suzanne, on August 29, 1780.
