ANTOINE-JEAN GROS, BARON GROS (PARIS, 1771 - MEUDON, 1835) Recto : Studies of figures for François I and Charles QUINT in the abbey of Saint Denis; Verso : Study for an equestrian portrait of Joachim MURAT, king of Naples. Black pencil annotated 'doubled' in pen and brown ink on the reverse (irregular edges) Without frame H: 27 cm - W: 31,50 cm Provenance : - Jean-Baptiste DELESTRE Collection (No. 47 of his collection of drawings of Baron Gros); - Collection Gaston Delestre; - Then by descent - Gros, ses amis et ses élèves', Paris, Petit Palais, May - July 1936, p. 228, n°442 Commentary : A composition commemorating the meeting of Charles V and Francis I at Saint Denis on January 13, 1540, was commissioned from Gros as part of the large order for the decoration of the abbey's sacristy. Two versions of the subject were worked on by the painter, one representing the two sovereigns on horseback in front of the abbey, of which we can see a sketch on the left of our drawing and which seems not to have been retained. The final painting, kept in the Louvre Museum, was exhibited at the 1812 and 1814 Salons (fig. 1).
