EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY FRENCH SCHOOL. "Portrait... - Lot 73 - Osenat
EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY FRENCH SCHOOL. "Portrait of the Maréchale Brune, wearing a pearl diadem. Oil on canvas 64 x 31 cm. Gilded frame with palmettes (chips). A.B.E. Biography : Angélique Nicole PIERRE (1766-1829) Coming from a modest background, she married the future marshal on 29 pluviôse year IV (18 February 1796). After the assassination of the marshal during the White Terror, she led an extremely pugnacious and courageous fight to rehabilitate the memory of her husband, as evidenced by her letter to the King: "Sire, ...A horrible attack was committed during the reign of Your Majesty. One of the great officers of the crown, a Marshal of France, has been cowardly assassinated and for nearly four years, this crime, so public, so revolting, has not been punished...Why, unbeknownst to Your Majesty, in his own palace, has the death of the Marshal received a kind of ratification? (the picture of this Marshal had been removed from the gallery) Apparently it was feared that his image, which remained in the Salon des Maréchaux, would remind you of the crime, and that in crossing this room to go and pray to God who protects France, it would not occur to you to have the culprits punished.... I ask justice, Sire justice for the murder of my husband, justice for the contempt made to his corpse, justice for the insult done to his memory by those who dared to accuse him of suicide. This justice, I ask it to the King, I ask it of his ministers, I ask it of the Chambers, I ask it to the whole nation.
