MARIE-ELEONORE GODEFROID (PARIS 1778-1849), ATTRIBUTED TO "Portrait of a young girl under the empire Oil on oval canvas 52 x 60 cm Wood and gilded stucco frame Provenance: Nîmes sale, December 2, 2017, no. 359 (French School) Biography : Marie-Éléonore GODEFROID, born on June 29, 1778 in Paris1 where she died on June 9, 1849, was a French portrait painter. Daughter and pupil of the painter Ferdinand-Joseph Godefroid, she became a professor of art and music at the Institute of Saint-Germain of Jeanne Campan, before resigning in 1795 to devote herself entirely to painting. She entered the studio of Baron Gérard, whom she befriended and helped with his work. Also a student of Isabey, she painted portraits in oil, watercolor and pastel. From 1800 onwards, she exhibited a large number of portraits in the Louvre: among others, the full-length portrait of the children of Marshal Ney, in 1810, the portraits of the children of the Duke of Rovigo and Queen Hortense, in 1812, those of the children of the Duke of Orleans, in 1819 and 1822, and those of the Duke of Orleans and Mr. and Mrs. de Guiche, in 1827. We also owe him the portrait of Abd el-Kader, the painter David, Jeanne Campan, Germaine de Staël, Talleyrand or the marshal of Lauriston. We still know several portraits of Godefroid that have not been exhibited, namely: those of Madame d'Oudenarde, the Countess Latour-Maubourg, Rodes, Camille Jordan; the latter was engraved by Mullier, etc.. She also painted for the government several copies after Baron Gérard, portraits of Louis XVIII and Charles X. She won several medals at the M. R. exhibitions in 1812 and 1824. She died on June 9, 1849 and was buried the day after in the Montparnasse cemetery. Her remains were exhumed on February 1, 1869 with those of Mme Lecerf, born Marie Louise Victoire Gérard, who died in 1853, a cousin of Baron Gérard, whose portrait he had painted in the 1790s.
