PAUL JOUVE (1878-1973) Eagle with a broken wing, 1927. Etching and gold leaves on basane Located Antwerp and dated 1927 in the plate. Signed and justified in pencil proof on leather N°1 in the lower left corner Sheet: 71 x 54 cm. Tray: 64,5 x 49 cm With the frame in Macassar ebony: 100,5 x 83 cm Unique copy History : Jouve made the original drawing of this eagle, whose wing was broken, at the Antwerp Zoo in 1927. This etching was printed at 50 copies, on paper. 5 copies were made on Basane, Jouve reserving these proofs for himself. These luxury proofs on leather were intended to receive a mosaic background of yellow and pink gold leaves. The high cost of these gold backgrounds will make that they were made only on order. This copy N°1 was the only one mosaicked with gold, the 4 other copies on basane not having been enhanced with gold Bibliography : -Paul Jouve, vie et oeuvre by Felix Marcilhac, Éditions de l'Amateur, Paris 2005. Reproduced on page 177 and 365. Provenance: Kept by the artist, in his studio, remained in the family since.
