PAUL JOUVE (1878-1973) - Lot 231
PAUL JOUVE (1878-1973) Grand Duke disheveled. 1928 Oil on cardboard Signed lower left 54 x 72 cm 78 x 95 with its original frame This painting is certainly one of the most representative works of the artist, Paul Jouve having chosen it to appear in the biography that Charles Terrasse dedicated to him during his lifetime, published in 1948. It was also used as a model for the "Grand-duc ébouriffé" which appears in the portfolio of etchings published by the Galerie Weill in 1930. Charles Terrasse writes about this painting: "Jouve, when he paints a great horned owl, puts decorative beauty above all else in his work. Witness this great horned owl represented from the front, folded on its legs, its head with round cat eyes, lowered, all around it the glory of its feathers in fan." Jouve will also use this motif to illustrate "Les Paradis Terrestres" by Colette.
