FLAUBERT (Gustave). Autograph letter signed... - Lot 136 - Osenat
FLAUBERT (Gustave). Autograph letter signed to Edmond Laporte. [Croisset], "Saturday" [May 10, 1879]. 2 pp. in-8, stamped with the recipient's initials. "My Bab, I received this morning a very kind letter whose signature I cannot read. I believe it is from Paul Baudry the painter (56 rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs) but the B is just like an S. About [the writer-traveler Edmond About] is mixed up in it and is, the signatory tells me, half in the writing of it. In short, I am told that the minister is offering me a position as assistant curator at the Mazarin, 3,000 francs, no lodging, and no obligation, not even that of coming to the offices. I must answer immediately, "the detour we are using at this moment is for him (the minister) a tribute to your legitimate pride". So there is no more question of a pension? I send the autograph to GUY [DE MAUPASSANT] - asking him for clarification. Three thousand francs is not worth five - but perhaps there will be a way to give a helping hand? It doesn't matter. As long as I am not obliged to do anything at all, "not even to go to the offices", I like that better than a pension, this disguised almsgiving humiliating me a lot. So try to get the story straight for me & to see Guy. About's intervention amazes me. A mystery. I am very impatient for the conclusion, whatever it may be. And you, my poor fellow, where do you stand with your personal affairs? Mulot came to see me the day before yesterday, I gave him an appointment for next Saturday to settle with you the circular to the subscribers. [Gustave Flaubert was working to collect funds to build a monument to the memory of his great friend Louis Bouilhet. Pascal-Désiré Mulot was also a friend of Louis Bouilhet]. If you could not have lunch on Saturday in Croisset, would you like to have it on Monday? (Next Monday in eight). Ask me, so that I can warn the aforementioned Mulot. I count on the zeal of my Bab & I kiss him... Would the bad luck be finished? Are we going to become quiet? On Edmond Laporte, see above n° 135.
