COCTEAU (Jean). Autograph letter signed "Jean" with a drawin - Lot 113
COCTEAU (Jean). Autograph letter signed "Jean" with a drawing of a star, addressed to Jean Marais. [Perpignan], July 1940. 1 p. folio. After the debacle, Jean Cocteau had taken refuge in Perpignan. Jean Marais, still a soldier, would soon be demobilized and would join him there. "My Jeannot, I learn with great sadness that your little teeth hurt. I know that we could take care of you now, but you are suffering and it is silly. Jean Bourgoint [Jean Bourgoin, a close friend of Jean Cocteau, was the model for the character of Paul in Les Enfants terribles] and Guy have registered as farmers and they are free, in Fourques [soldiers who declared themselves farmers were demobilized first]. It's a pity that your leaders and comrades know you too well - it's true that the lists go to the ministry and that all this work is anonymous. Every day I wonder if the radio will tell us that you are free. All the more so as I meet Jeannot under the orange wings everywhere and my heart beats and, although no one looks like you, this small resemblance of the uniform awakens a hope. Why aren't you in Perpignan, which is teeming with wings? Today the kids all went to the sea and you would have been there with them. BUT I WILL HAVE ALL THE PATIENCE, BECAUSE, AT THE END, THERE IS FINALLY THE MAGNIFICENT CERTAINTY OF LIVING TOGETHER AND WORKING. No doubt I will let the first wave of agricultural and other foolishness pass... and I will appear when Germany will erect a France that looks like France and not a cockroach France - Claude Mauriac style. My Jeannot, I adore you and do not read or look at anything without reporting it to you, to us. Let us have courage, the future is beautiful... "
