ERNST (Max). Autograph letter signed "Max... - Lot 31 - Osenat
ERNST (Max). Autograph letter signed "Max Ernst" in two places, addressed to Christian Zervos. Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche, "Wednesday". "My dear Zervos, thank you for sending me Jimmy's [Max Ernst's son] letter and for adding this friendly note. I haven't thanked you yet, I think, for the Cahiers d'art. Very nice! AND THE HOUSE IS LOOKING GOOD. We hope that in the course of the summer, you and Yvonne [Yvonne Marion, wife of Christian Zervos] will have the opportunity to see it with your own eyes (as we say "de vive voix"). I HAVE NO DESIRE TO LEAVE IT, SO I WILL NOT GO TO LIVE IN AMERICA. I prefer to live and work here. What you tell me about the date of the exhibition at the Galerie Mai [directed by Christian Zervos] removes a big concern for me: I could, of course, do this exhibition in May, but I would much prefer to wait until the fall. In this way, I will have all the peace of mind to prepare a very beautiful exhibition, because I have started some very new and perhaps quite surprising things. I would only need time to finalize my work..." Max Ernst and his partner at the time, the painter Leonora Carrington, lived from 1938 to 1941 in Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche in a house that they decorated together.
