DORÉ (Gustave). Autograph letter signed ILLUSTRATED WITH 6 O - Lot 30
DORÉ (Gustave). Autograph letter signed ILLUSTRATED WITH 6 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS, addressed to a "Mademoiselle Gaby". [Paris, August 3, 1867, according to a pencil note by another hand]. 8 pp. in-8; letter incomplete of the center bifeuillet. A playful letter addressed to a young friend who is traveling in Switzerland. A great lover of this country himself (he went there more than ten times from 1853 on), Gustave Doré gives her advice and amuses himself with fanciful playlets: On Lake Lucerne, the "ship loaded with tourists armed with their mountain spikes topped with their chamois horns", at the Hotel du Righi in Glion near Montreux, the "rustic and unlearned yankee who towards the 3rd service [at the hotel] will offer you his wig to eat while beating with his knife on the table the measures of an unknown air", etc. THE 6 DRAWINGS, WITH CARICATURAL VIEWS (ink and pen) represent a ship loaded with tourists, the ascent to a summit also loaded with tourists, Miss Gaby with her veil in the wind, a mountain veiled with clouds, an American behaving badly at the table next to Miss Gaby, the same one confusing himself in politeness in front of the same one. The recipient is perhaps Gabrielle d'Uckermann, known as Gaby (1853-1934), future wife of the painter Ernest Hébert.
