VOLTAIRE (François-Marie Arouet, said). Elements of the philosophy of Neuton, made accessible to everyone. In Amsterdam, at Jacques Desbordes, 1738. In-8, (2 of which the second one is blank)-399-(1) pp, title printed in red and black, red morocco, smooth spine decorated, triple gilt fillet framing the boards with corner fleurons, gilt inner scroll, red edges, corners a little rubbed, 4 page numbers scratched, stain on 4 pages (Bound by Derome le jeune rue St Jâque audeßus de St Benoit). ORIGINAL EDITION, in the second printing in the name of Jacques Desbordes, which presents slight variations with the first in the name of Élie Jacob Ledet. COPY ON LARGE PAPER. AN INTRODUCTION TO NEWTON'S THOUGHT, AS A WEAPON AGAINST CHRISTIANISM: Voltaire had discovered Newtonian principles during his stay in England (1725-1728), had seen in them a refutation of the errors of Cartesianism, and had considered empiricism and the experimental method as a philosophical weapon against Christianity. He wrote his Elemens in 1736, while he was a refugee in Holland, and entrusted his manuscript, although still incomplete in the last chapter, to Élie Jacob Ledet of Amsterdam, who had it completed by a Dutch mathematician, printed it, and published it in association with Jacques Desbordes. IMPORTANT ILLUSTRATION ENGRAVED ON COPPER by Jacob Folkema, Jacob Van der Schley, Bernard Picart, etc., consisting of 9 plates out of the text (a frontispiece, a portrait, 7 scientific compositions, one of which is folding), and 108 vignettes in the text: an emblem at the title, 49 headbands and tailpieces (4 different headbands in repetitions, 5 different tailpieces in repetitions) and 58 scientific representations. With 3 woodcut scientific diagrams in the text. Bengesco, no. 1570; Cohen-De Ricci, col. 1037-1038, with erroneous collation, which cites the present copy; Norman, no. 2165. Provenance: the Parisian bookseller Guillaume-Luc BAILLY (his coded handwritten notation, "yif - lop," on the verso of the last flyleaf, i.e., according to Erick Aguirre's decryption system, "purchased 26 livres, value at sale 54 livres"); probably Pierre-Antoine-François DINCOURT D'HANGARD (Paris, March 9, 1789, and following days, no. 468) ; probably Prince Sigismond RADZIWILL (Paris, January 22-February 1, 1866, no. 433), who bought Dincourt d'Hangard's copy; Frédéric-Léon de JANZE (Paris, April 20-24, 1909, no. 136 of the catalog); Robert SCHUMANN (ex-libris vignette); Raphaël ESMERIAN (trace of his ex-libris vignette 27).
