SADE (Donatien-Alphonse de). Aline et Valcour, or the Philos - Lot 18
SADE (Donatien-Alphonse de). Aline et Valcour, or the Philosophical Novel. In Paris, with the widow Girouard, 1795. 8 parts in 4 volumes in-18, xiv-(2 blanks)-150-(6 of which the first 2 and the fourth blank)-165 [figured 151 to 315]-(1 blank) + (4 of which the last blank)-234-(4 of which the first 2 blanks)-269 [figured 235 to 503]-(1 blank) + 267-(1 blank counting as 268)-(4 of which the third blank)-305 [erroneously figured 269 to 482, 485, 484, and 487 to 575]-(1 blank) + (4 of which the last blank)-204-(4 of which the last blank)-170 [figured 205 to 374] pp. - The whole bound in 4 volumes of cherry half calf, spines decorated with gilt fillets, cold scrolls, and gilt designs at the head and tail including quatrefoils; spines and headpieces slightly rubbed, paper of boards and endpapers renewed, leaves A2 and A3 of volume III shorter, some stains; without errata leaf of vol. II (binding circa 1825). ORIGINAL EDITION PUBLISHED DURING THE AUTHOR'S LIFETIME. Begun in 1791, the printing was not completed until 1795: Jacques Girouard, who had produced the first sheets, was guillotined under the Terror for having been the printer until 1792 of the royalist periodical the Gazette de Paris, and it was his widow who took over the work and completed it. According to Gilbert Lély, this chaotic printing gave rise to three issues, the first two illustrated with 14 plates, the third with 2 plates, one of which was free. RARE DUE TO ITS CONDEMNATION TO DESTRUCTION by a judgment of May 19, 1815 arguing its pornographic character and its socio-political theories. He was also put on the index in 1825. 15 engraved plates on copperplate out of text; without the free frontispiece of the fifth part in volume III, as almost always, according to the bibliography of Jules Gay and Jules Lemonnyer. This is probably a copy of the third issue, ENRICHED IN DUPLICATE WITH CENSORED LEAVES FROM PREVIOUS ISSUES: that is, in vol. II, ff. M2 and M5 (pp. 135-136 and 141-142), O1 and O6 (pp. 157-158, 167-168), ff. T1-2 and T5-6 (pp. 217-220 and 225-228), ff. V2-5 (pp. 231-234, half-title and verso, title for 235 and blank verso for 236), ff. X2, Y6 and Aa6 (pp. 261-288), Cc3-Cc4 (pp. 305-308), Kk1 and KK6 (pp. 385-386 and 395-396); in volume III, ff. A5-6 (pp. 9-11). The leaves Nn2 (signed *, pp. 423-424) and Nn5 (pp. 429-430) of vol. II belong to a censored version, but are not duplicates. Provenance : Gérard Nordmann (bookplate).
