Biography: Jean-Ernest, baron de BEURMANN, born on October 25, 1775 in Strasbourg, died on October 10, 1850 in Toulon, from a family of Alsace, is a French general of the Revolution and the Empire. He took part in the great days of Ulm, Austerlitz and Jena, as well as in the capture of Lübeck, Eylau, Heilsberg and Kœnigsberg. Everywhere he gave evidence of the most rare intrepidity. The Emperor made him Commander of the Legion of Honor in 1807 and Baron of the Empire in 1808. Passed to Spain in 1809, Baron de Beurmann, at the head of a corps of Westphalian troops, displayed the most brilliant valor at the siege of Gerona. It was he who took the entrenched convent of Saint-Denis. He took part in the attack of the fort of Mont-Saint-Jean and went up three times to the assault. Appointed chief of staff, he distinguished himself again at the siege of Figuières. The Emperor conferred on him the rank of brigadier general on October 23, 1811. On January 7, 1812, he again distinguished himself by capturing, at the head of four companies, a strong position called Le Calvaire, defended by 3,000 Spaniards. In 1814, General de Beurmann was charged with joining Augereau's corps in Lyon. He was able to hold the position of the Grange Blanche, located in Lyon, which he had been entrusted with defending, and he repelled the repeated attacks of the enemy, causing him to suffer considerable losses. Upon the return of the Bourbons, he was appointed Knight of Military Merit and put in charge of Toulon in 1818.
