After Israel SILVEFTRE (1621-1691) Quinque... - Lot 108 - Osenat
After Israel SILVEFTRE (1621-1691) Quinque Tumarum in Amphitheatro Pompa exhibita Framed black engraving 53 x 75 cm (on view) (small pits and restored tear) Note: Numerous horsemen and halberdiers lined up, the center ones in a half circle in front of a castle and admired by spectators". This print is part of a series engraved to illustrate the great carousel of the Tuileries given by Louis XIV in Paris on June 5-6, 1662, where races of heads and rings by the king, princes and lords of the court were held. The memory of this event has remained thanks to the publication of a work of 90 prints commissioned by the king to three great engravers, including Israël Silvestre, accompanied by texts by Charles Perrault, "Courses de testes et de bague faites par le roy et par les princes et seigneurs de sa cour en l'année MDCXLII". This ceremony gave its name to the current Place du Carrousel in the Louvre.
